Rest In Peace

white water rafting

Many of my clients say work is crazy.

Home life is hectic. The demands are relentless.

They just can’t slow down or take a break.

And yet that's exactly what I ask them to do.

I call it "resting in the rapids" which is really just a reminder to return to the inner peace that exists at their core.

It's there for you too, you know.  But you'll need to pull your attention away from the whitewater-turbulence of the mind and take a moment to calm your nervous system.

Don't worry.  I’m not talking about 30 minutes of meditation (as nice as that is).  I’m talking about micro-moments throughout the day.

Just stop and check in with yourself.   Slow your breathing.  Look around the room.  Connect to your environment, to your body, to the present moment.

You might not feel an immediate sense of peace, but you'll create a pathway to it, I promise.  And the more you do this, the greater access you'll have to a wiser, less frazzled version of yourself.

Sure the clock is ticking.  Yes, your boss has certain expectations of you. But even when you’re paddling for your life, certain that the force of the water is going to slam you against the rocks . . .

You can still pause, slow your breathing, and take a look around.

That’s when you'll see you’re not really in a fast moving river, hurtling toward the falls.

A lot of our mind-stress is bullshit, love.  Things aren't nearly as urgent as survivor brain makes them out to be.  And taking a break from all the high intensity is imperative for your wellbeing.

“I’ll do that when I’m dead,” one person told me.

She laughed, but I didn't join her.

Because living in a state of constant stress and anxiety isn’t living.

And you don't need to die before you can rest in peace!  You can take a time-out right now and regulate your nervous system.

Your mind will resist this, I promise you.

  • I'm too busy for that.

  • What I'm doing is just too important.

  • The report is due.

  • The kids need my attention.

  • The house won’t get cleaned by itself.

Have you noticed this?  How the mind doesn’t have time for 30 seconds of life-saving connection?

It ignores the stress signals, the anxiety, the internal pressure, and just pushes through.

Is this reasonable?  Logical?  Sensible?  Intelligent?  Sane? No.  It’s isn’t.

Pausing to support yourself is a power move.

Try it sometime when the rushing river of DOING threatens to pull you under.

  • Relax your body.  (Because when you relax your body, you relax your mind.)

  • Immerse yourself in presence. (Because when you pull your attention away from thinking, you gain access to deeper awareness and BEING.)

  • Plug into your values and your sense of PLAY. (Because when you lighten up and commit to what really matters, new possibilities appear.)

Resting in peace is a tool for the LIVING.

And when you choose to use it, the magic of life will open its arms to support you.

That's when you'll actually feel alive and aligned with something greater than just the pull of the river.

And that's when the wild rapids become fun.

Sending you so much love,
